Training Sessions
The USL organizes a wide range of introductory and training sessions for anyone keen to get to know our library and its services a bit better.
General introductory sessions on using the library
Just starting out in your studies or not set foot in the library yet?
We regularly run brief introductions to using the library at the start of every semester. You can choose either an on-site introduction or a digital session.
We are looking forward to introducing you to our library in the space of 30 minutes and answering your questions:
- Where do I register?
- How do I get into the open stacks?
- Where can I find the perfect learning spot for me?
FAQs
At the start of each semester, we announce our dates on this web page, under “Latest News from the USL”and via our social media channels.
As participant numbers are limited, we would be grateful if you could register in advance using this registration form.
The sessions are primarily intended for students at the University of Bonn. However, people from outside the University will also be welcome if there are free spaces.
Individual introductory sessions can be arranged for groups of five or more.
Simply email our training team at schulung@ulb.uni-bonn.de.
As we are an institution of the University of Bonn, the introductory and training sessions are geared primarily to our students. Bonn City Library runs activities suitable for schoolchildren in all year groups.

Coaching for tutors

However, we are also happy to provide a coaching session for tutors here in the library, particularly if you are looking after several groups.
We will tell you what is really important for your students to know and get you “fit for the library.”
Interested? Then simply email our training team at schulungen@ulb.uni-bonn.de with your preferred dates—no need to fill in any forms.
FAQs
It’s very important to us that students are given a proper introduction to using the library. For this reason, we can only allow tutors who have received coaching to give tours.
To make sure that the introductory sessions run smoothly, the training team must be informed of any planned library tours at least a week in advance wherever possible.
Please bear in mind for planning purposes that tours can only run on Monday to Friday between 10 am and 6 pm.
As the arrangements for using the library change all the time, we recommend refreshing your knowledge regularly. Please get in touch with our training team in good time to book a repeat coaching session.
Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate requests made at very short notice.
Since our training team always has a lot on its plate at the start of the semester, we would be grateful if you could register in good time. Please understand that we are unable to accommodate requests made at short notice.
Introductory sessions on our bonnus search portal
How does bonnus work?
We run individual training sessions for groups of five or more to explain the basic features of our search portal:
- What data can I find?
- How do I use the filters?
- How can I use the search interface?
- How do I manage my account?
- We will gladly answer these and any other questions you might have.
We can also discuss specific problems with literature research with you in greater detail in a bonnus consultation, which you will need to arrange separately.
Please feel free to contact our training team at schulung@ulb.uni-bonn.de if you are interested.
Citavi is a software package for reference management and knowledge organization. The Windows application (no Mac version is available) helps students and researchers through all steps of working with academic literature.
Newcomers to Citavi can take part in a training session for beginners.
Training sessions for advanced users are offered for anyone with some prior knowledge of Citavi. You will get to know Citavi’s most important features in a demonstration delivered as a presentation via the videconferencing software Zoom. We also provide training in English.
